119 members of Congress urge Secretary Clinton to help end LRA violence
In a historic show of support from Congress for Resolve Uganda's policy goals, 119
members of Congress signed letters to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton this month urging her to make ending LRA violence a priority. The
letters call on Secretary Clinton to
develop a strategy to protect civilians in central Africa from LRA attacks and take action to help permanently prevent future LRA violence. The letters were promoted by over 1,700 people who converged on DC last month as part of the How It Ends Lobby Days, sponsored by Resolve Uganda with its partners at Invisible Children and Enough Project.
With so many signatories from Senators and Members of the House of Representatives, these letters have generated greater interest from Congress than any past initiative focused on ending the war.
Here's more about the two different versions, one in the House and one in the Senate:
- The Senate version of the letter (download it here), circulated by Senators Russ Feingold (D-WI) and Sam Brownback (R-KS), was signed by 23 Senators. The letter received broad bipartisan support, as well as the endorsement of the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate's subcommittee on Africa.
- The House version of the letter (download it here), circulated by Reps. Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Ed Royce (R-CA), has been signed by a bipartisan group of over 90 Representatives, and was sent to Secretary Clinton on July 14. It is similar to the Senate version, but draws more specific attention to the need to apprehend Joseph Kony if he continues refusing peaceful disarmament. The signatories include the top Democrats and Republicans on the Foreign Affairs committee and Africa subcommittee.
