SAVE THE DATE: 2009 Lobby Day Announced!
A little over a year ago, nearly 1,000 people from every corner of the country descended upon D.C. with a single purpose: to get the U.S. to step up its game and help end Africa's longest-running war. The goals of the 2008 Lobby Days for Northern Uganda were met (U.S. support for peace talks/collaboration with the U.N./more money for reconstruction) and peace was closer than ever before.
We had hoped after last year's Lobby Day that there wouldn't be a need for another one, but Joseph Kony had other plans. Ignoring his best shot at peace, he instead opted to escalate his insurgency - ushering in a devastating new chapter in this two-decade war. So we're doing it again.
An unimaginable nightmare is now engulfing four countries - with almost 600 kids abducted by Kony's army in just the past few months and tens of thousands of families fleeing their homes to escape the violence. Kony must be stopped and this war must be ended. But we've found that our leaders only take the kind of meaningful action that's needed when they're pressured to do so.
So the Lobby Days are back. "How It Ends: Rally and Lobby Day 2009" are in the works for June 22-23 here in D.C. Given the scale of the crisis currently unfolding, we're planning to make this Lobby Day dwarf our prior efforts. We're still working on the website/registration page, so keep checking back - but I wanted you to know the dates asap so you can start your preparations and plan to be here for the most historic event ever in trying to get the U.S. to finally stop Joseph Kony.
How does it end? With all of us working together to end it. Hope to see you in D.C.!
