Check out today's Washington Post
The Washington Post ran an article this morning on the remaining challenges to the Juba Peace Process and what exit strategies might remain for LRA leader Joseph Kony. And not to toot our own horn or anything, but you might notice a little mention of Resolve Uganda and our Executive Director, Michael Poffenberger. Sure, it may not be a "quote" exactly (alright - at all), but really, who needs those little apostrophes? Not us.
The article looks at the LRA negotiating team's recent trip to the Hague to discuss the oustanding warrants issued by the International Criminal Court for Joseph Kony and other LRA commanders. While a final peace agreement between the Ugandan government and LRA could be reached as early as the end of this month, it remains to be seen what impact these warrants and the role of the ICC will have on the possibility of getting a formal, final agreement.
Resolve Uganda believes that the signing and especially implementation of theĀ Final Peace Agreement should not be held hostage by one or two obstinate individuals. The issues addressed in the Juba Peace Process looked at not only security arrangements for the top LRA commanders, but also the root causes of the war, arrangements for lower-level fighters and abducted children forced to fight, as well as implementation mechanisms that would allow the displaced people of northern Uganda to begin returning home with a heightened degree of security. A formal agreement would be a significant milestone for the people of northern Uganda who have endured this conflict for more than two decades and its implementation should be the immediate priority of the international community.
