Find out what's been agreed to in the Juba Peace Talks

For those of you who have been looking for the text of the agreements between the Government of Uganda and Lord's Resistance Army that have come out of the Juba Peace Talks, look no further.

Just today, we added a new page to our site that has the full text of all of the formal agenda items so far, as well as a few additional agreements.

Just as a refresher course, the Juba Peace Talks began in the summer of 2006 and laid out a framework for both ending active violence between the Government and rebel army, as well as addressing the root causes of the war. This framework included five agenda items:

  1. A Cessation of Hostilities agreement
  2. Comprehensive solutions to the war
  3. Accountability and Reconciliation
  4. Disarmament, Demobilization & Reintegration
  5. A permanent ceasefire

As of the beginning of this month, all of these agenda items have been agreed upon. Now we're just waiting for the final, formal signing ceremony, which is expected to take place on March 30. Questions remain as to the intentions of LRA leader Joseph Kony, but it is expected that the ceremony will go on as planned.

With this much accomplished, it is unlikely that one person, even if that one person is Kony, will be able to derail this process. The important thing now is to look ahead to the implementation of these agenda items - which will allow the people of northern Uganda to experience the fruits of peace and begin returning to their normal lives.
