For International Activists

If you don’t currently live in the United States but are still looking for ways to put pressure on the international community to do more for peace, you can adapt the text of the sample letter below to send to policymakers in your part of the world.

Sample Letter:

Dear ____________,

I am writing today to express my concern for the conflict in northern Uganda. For over 21 years the innocent civilians of northern Uganda have endured, and continue to endure, a war between the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army and the Government of Uganda. Nearly 2-million people have been forced into squalid displacement camps that lack basic services, and tens of thousands of children have been abducted and forced to fight as soldiers or act as rebel wives and sex slaves.

Peace negotiations currently being hosted by the Government of South Sudan have brought new hope to achieve an end to this war. Relative calm has returned to northern Uganda for the first time in many years. Yet, to result in lasting peace, the negotiations process requires greater external support and leverage. Communities displaced by the war wish to return home, but lack basic services at their homes of origin. A significant investment to facilitate a return process is thus urgently needed.

I therefore hope you will:

  • Hold a public hearing to examine our nation’s response to the war and involvement in the historic Juba peace talks;
  • Direct increased financial and diplomatic resources to support the peace process;
  • Support and fund an immediate financial investment to help displaced communities in both northern Uganda and southern Sudan return to their homes.
I look forward to your reply and I promise you that I will continue do my part to educate the public and advocate for sustainable peace in northern Uganda.

Sincerely,
